10 things I love about MIT Congratulations! You’ve probably gotten into more than one college and now it’s time to decide which offer to accept. As a senior blogger, I’ve written about this before (here , here, and here), but I thought I’d offer a list of 10 things that I love about MIT (in no particular order.) 1. The students This one is a no-brainer. Thanks to the Admissions people, my classmates are a ridiculously talented bunch with the most diverse interests. There are the pre-meds and the hackers, the thespians and the band geeks, the gear heads and the tissue culture nerds. Everyone is involved with a million activities, which can be frustrating when you’re planning a meeting, but is generally amazing to witness. Additionally, no matter where you live or what your major is, MIT students can always bond over how much work that they have to do. It’s an instant conversation starter. I’m surprised that the song, It sucks to be me, isn’t more popular (maybe because not enough people have seen Avenue Q.) 2. Rooms with a view and living in Beantown I love the river. The majority of dorms are by the Charles River and in Baker, for example, 80% of rooms have a river view. I also can’t imagine a better a college town than Boston. Just a few weeks ago, I saw a talk by Carl Wieman (Physics, 2001). Also, thanks to the UROP program, you can do research for all four years of college and who knows, maybe youll get to join this elite Nobel club one day! 4. It’s a meritocracy It doesn’t matter who your great-grandfather was or what year you are, as long as you’re qualified you’ll get a UROP as a freshman, become editor-in-chief of an MIT research journal as a sophomore, and become president of your dorm as a junior. This is a beautiful thing, and not one to dismiss quickly. 5. You have freedom to choose your classes It is so cool to be able to take pretty much any class, in any department, at any school (MIT, Harvard, Museum of Fine Arts, Wellesley.) There are a few classes that are notoriously difficult to lottery into (like some Management classes offered through the Sloan school and some of the pre-med lab requirements), but in general you can’t whatever interests you. If you don’t feel like working too hard in the class, you can take it on pass/no record or as a “listener.” You can play a fun game by going to the subject listings and making a hypothetical schedule for yourself on WebSIS. 6. Freshman 1st semester pass/no record and IAP This is proof that MIT is not out to get you. They’re so kind, in fact, that they give you an entire semester to acclimate to the pressure-cooker of MIT. For more info, read the entries on: Why You Can’t Fail A Class Freshman Year. I’ve probably talked your ears off about IAP, but it’s such a fun time to do whatever you want. This IAP, I worked on my senior thesis, explored Boston, took a wine tasting class, worked out at the gym, and saw several movies. My classmates traveled around the world, got experience in companies through externships, and shadowed doctors in hospitals. To read more, click here. 7. The professors care about you One of the reasons that I didn’t go to University X was because I heard that the professors were much more concerned about their graduate students than the undergrads. At MIT, I would definitely say that this is not the case. When professors are teaching an undergraduate class, they really dedicate a lot of time to preparing the lectures (I heard that it takes ~10 hours to prepare a 1 hour lecture) and they hold weekly office hours where you can just walk into their office and barrage them with questions. Additionally, you’re automatically assigned to a professor who serves are your advisor, and they’re a tremendous resource. 8. People will assume you can fix their cars and build the next space telescope This comic, from the Feb. 29, 2008 issue of The Tech, says it allexcept the attention is not always negative (especially when it gets you a job)! 9. Everybody loves a nerdy joke (or at least they won’t pellet you with rotten tomatoes if you make one) Re: my entry on math jokes: here 10. There’s always too much to do: the work hard/ play hard mentality Sometimes, I’ve had so much work to do that it made me cry. That’s the reality. When it’s 2 am on a Thursday night and you still have half a problem set to do, it’s nice to know that the weekend is just a day away. I’ve never taken the time to count up how many emails I get about events on a particular weekend, but I’d venture a guess that the number is around twenty. There are hundreds of student groups that get money from MIT to host cool events. Consequently, the choices are dizzying.

Them having thin clothing does not make American Eagle a good choice for winter clothing, unlike Hollister. That is why during the winter Hollister gets a lot more customers. American also does not have a lot of different styles. Most of their clothing is alike; there really is not a big difference in the way they look. In Jealous Husband Returns in Form of Parrot Butler creates a world of wonder; the main character dies and comes back in form of a parrot. We as humans only wonder what happens after death and Butler tells us what he thinks, reincarnation. This person’s particular reincarnation was torturous, being that he becomes a bird and goes home with his wife and the wife has many different lovers Butler writes â€Å"I watch the men go in and I hear the sounds but I can’t quite see. And they drive me crazy† (Butler768). If I was this bird, having all my memories intact, I too wouldn’t be able to stand the noise. Even though both stories have their own theme, they both convey a sense of sorrow that makes you want to jump into the story and help them but suddenly you too are helpless. A similarity that both stories have is that in each story both husbands are clearly in love with their wife. In The Yellow Wallpaper the husband states: â€Å"He would go down to the cellar, if I wished, and have it whitewashed into the bargain. †(Gilman731) In this passage you can see that he would do anything she wished, but all he wanted was for her to get better for him and their child. While the Husband Returns in Form of Parrot the husband, whom is the parrot, has a more subtle way to describe his love: â€Å"I can’t believe how beautiful she is. Those great brown eyes, almost as dark as the center of mine. And her nose – I don’t remember her for her nose but its beauty is clear to me now. †(Butler766) He describes her beauty in such a way that you can see how mesmerized he is of her, and how he wished he could be with her. These stories both convey an undying love that the husbands have for their wife, even one wife is hysterical and the other doesn’t even know he exist. Another similarity that these stories showed the reader is the need to be heard. The main characters both had the need to express their emotion and feelings. In â€Å"The Yellow Wallpaper† she wasn’t able to express her feelings and emotion due to her sickness. She had a way to express them which was by writing, but not even that she was allowed to do. Her isolation secluded her from the world. Her only way was a piece of paper and a pen. In comparison with Butler story, we see how he tries to express his feelings through a single word. â€Å"â€Å"Hello,† I say again. Please listen to this tiny heart that beats fast at all times for you. †(Butler770) This was him trying to deliberate his feelings with one single word, hello. This two characters’ need for manifestation of their feelings led them to anxiety and later, death. The thing that most impacted me in both the stories was the ending of each, both protagonist chose to end their life. Charlotte Perkins Gilman created a whimsical ending that would scare most readers. I personally had to read the final page a few times in order to assimilate what happened. After you are done with the story you tie down some clues that the protagonist gave throughout the story leading up to her death. â€Å"There is a recurrent spot where the pattern lolls like a broken neck and two bulbous eyes stare at you upside down† (Gilman732). This is the first passage that she admits seeing the figures strangled. When you continue reading you see this: â€Å"They get through, and then the pattern strangles them off and turns them upside down and makes their eyes white. †(Gilman 738) This reminds me off when watching a movie where someone is at the psychiatrist and they show them ink on blank paper, whatever the patient sees is what actually they are feeling. I think that she was planning on strangling herself from the beginning; she even had rope in her room at the end of the story. Robert Olen Butler makes his ending a sadder one; at least he got me in a melancholic mood after I read it. â€Å"I look at the sky the color of the brow of a blue-front Amazon. A shadow of birds spanks across the lawn. And I spread my wings. I will fly now. Even though I know there is something between me and that place where I can be free of all these feelings, I will fly. I will throw myself there again and again. †(Butler 770) He was so sad, without an ounce of hope that he rather died that continue feeling what he felt. While reading these short stories I felt an enormous surge of emotions, which I think should always be present when reading fiction. I tend to choose happier endings but in these stories I believe Gilman and Butler created perfect endings for their stories. I felt the desperation the characters had, so I could understand their reasoning in taking their life. My usual scenery is long lines in every fast food restaurant drive through, and who is not in a line is fighting to get in one; to chow down on a quick cheap meal before rushing back to his/her busy life. People have time constraints which make eating on the run a necessity; but there is an element of laziness to prepare large quantities to freeze and eat later. The best teacher for this type of preparation is grandma or grandpa, especially those who have been through the great depression where no food would go to waste. Looking further, fast food can fulfill our daily caloric needs, but it can easily contain hidden ingredients and substances that have been known to cause serious health problems. For example, many of the fried foods offered contain high levels of trans-fats and sugar that play a large role in obesity and diabetes. Obviously, Subway and Wendy’s understands the importance of healthy options and have included them in their menus. For example, both have fresh alternatives to tempting fried greasy foods; and offer chef alads and fresh ingredients in ways to satisfy even the most stubborn appetite; with the addition of well- seasoned grilled foods versus greasy unhealthy fried foods. Wendy’s is the only fast food restaurant to offer a baked potato as an alternative to french-fries, whereas Subway does not and offers potato chips. Although, many of us feel nutrition is important to staying physically healthy, cost savings when choosing to eat outside the home is equally important. Subway and Wendy’s offer a â€Å"Dollar Menu† for cost savings, however, Subway allows the customer to customize the food they eat, whereas Wendy’s only allows the customer to order from a numbered menu with little choices to customize. I have purchased food from a dollar menu at fast food restaurants on many occasions for my children, and watched as they dissected and discarded some of the food before they ate because they did not like a specific ingredient that could not be removed prior to purchase. As small as it sounds, I for one, do not like throwing away anything I purchase because I simply do not have money to waste. Subway allows the consumer to stand and watch how his/her food is being prepared through a glass window and choosing what fresh ingredients is added. Wendy’s has private kitchens where most food is made in advance, packaged in plastic containers and stored in a large refrigerator until purchased. Being confident that your hard earned money is not being used to purchase prepackaged unhealthy foods is also a nice touch. Subway offers a saving club in form of a â€Å"Subway Card†, where consumers earn points with each purchase, and the accumulated points can earn additional discounts and savings. Wendy’s offers coupons and weekly specials, however, no other cost savings are offered. Additionally, focusing on physical and financial aspects of fast food dining is important, but the environment is suffering because of excessive garbage and the need to recycle. Wendy’s uses non-recyclable, non-biodegradable packaging materials and most of those used materials do not end up in proper disposal containers and contribute to most of our litter we see on the streets, sidewalks, and public parks that contributes to a messy, unkempt, and unclean environment.
